This three-week course equips school leaders with the tools to identify, assess and proactively manage risks across all facets of independent school operations. From financial sustainability and compliance challenges to cyber threats and reputational exposure, participants will learn to build a dynamic risk framework aligned with enterprise risk management concepts, institutional values and long-term goals.
This course includes asynchronous instruction available daily through videos, reading and discussion boards. Participants should plan to reserve an hour daily for the course in order to maximize learning.
This course is offered in partnership with One Schoolhouse.
Week one lays the foundation for effective risk management by focusing on risk assessment. You’ll explore how to identify potential risks across school operations, evaluate their likelihood and impact, and prioritize what matters most. This essential first step helps schools make informed, proactive decisions to protect students, staff and reputation.
In week two, we map out the full spectrum of risks — internal and external — facing independent schools today and risk management strategies that school business leaders can engage. This module is about building awareness at the leadership level so you can anticipate challenges, not just react to them.
In the final week, we bring risk management full circle. You’ll learn how to implement practical risk controls and processes, establish a team to provide ongoing monitoring and conduct regular reviews, and communicate clearly with the wider school community. The focus is turning plans into action and ensuring your school stays proactive, compliant and resilient.
