U.K. Private School Fees Up 22%

May 27, 2025, 9:37 AM

(From BBC) Private school fees in the UK rose 22.6% in January compared to a year earlier, driven by the new 20% VAT (Value Added Tax) introduced on tuition. The average termly fee for day schools is now £7,382, up from £6,021, according to the Independent Schools Council (ISC). VAT is a consumption tax added to goods and services. The government introduced it on private school fees in January to boost state school funding. The ISC expects applications to drop but says it’s too soon to measure the impact.
